Welcome back to another season of art classes! As we expand our class selections and offer longer classes to both younger and older children, I am excited to explore new art themes and build art skills that will last developing artists a lifetime. For this spring’s 8-week package, we will take time each class to explore the building blocks of art including line, shape, form, colour, value, texture and space. We will develop technical skills such as realistic pencil drawing and how to paint with watercolours, as well as exploring art themes such as mood and emotion. The goal of these classes is to give middle and high school students exposure to both the technical and interpretational elements of art and build confidence in themselves and their ability to attempt artistic endeavors on their own.
Because every student enters art class with a different background in art, I will present lessons that are approachable for beginners but have options for customization and layers of extra challenge for students who are looking to expand on what they can already do. This way, beginners won’t be intimidated and more experienced students will continue to improve!
It is my hope that every child gets to experience art in a positive way during their education path and has the opportunity to make meaningful connections between the art that they study in school and the encounters they have in their personal lives. Art is so much more than just a pursuit for the select few; it is a language that intersects with all areas of study including math, science, and the humanities. If a student can learn to believe in their own ability to create art and identify art in the world around them, then our job as educators is well done.
